These tasting notes are provided by Giles MacDonogh who is the author of four books and a great many articles on food and wine. He is chairman of the German Jury at the Decanter World Wine Awards, but despite this, he finds a big place in his heart for the wines of the southern Rhone and Domaine des Anges in particular.

60% Bourboulenc, 40% Roussanne. Golden yellow with some faint green lights. Intense and very charming nose, floral and slightly toasty – hints of ripe, exotic fruits, finishing with a mineral note. Fleshy and ample in the mouth with hints of vanilla and tinned fruit.

70% Grenache and 15% Syrah, 15% Cinsault. Pretty bright pink with blue lights. Very intense aromas of red fruits and pomegranates. Good balance between sweetness and freshness which makes for an appetising combination.
50% Grenache, 50% Syrah. Red with purple lights. An intense bouquet of berry fruit, bell peppers – and spices. After an attractively crunchy, concentrated attack, an intense fruitiness develops quickly and fills out the palate.

95% Roussanne, 5% Bourboulenc. Yellow gold colour with brilliant lights. Refined and intense nose reminiscent of ripe fruits, peaches and coconuts, finishing with a floral note. The palate is rich, suave and creamy with a taste of white fruit,white peaches, vanilla and a slight hint of liquorice.
90% Syrah and 10% Grenache. Deep, nocturnal red with violet edges. Rich aromas of spices, black cherries, violet and touches of liquorice on the nose. The cherry, spice and violet flavours are enclosed by a rich, smooth tannin structure which provides a fulsome and powerful finish in the mouth.

100% Viognier. Brilliant in colour – pale yellow with golden lights. On the nose, intense and complex – citrus fruits, honey and quince jelly with a palate of citrus fruits – hints of quinces and vine peaches. In the middle palate there is an unctuous creaminess leading to a finale that is both elegant and fresh.
95% Grenache, 5% Syrah. Deep colour with ruby-red with blue lights. Rich and dense on the nose: black fruit jam (cherries and blackberries) spice and liquorice. Voluptuous and full on the palate, underpinned by a tight but fine tannic structure. Hints of kirsch with plenty of cut and thrust.
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. In colour deep, dark red with purple tinges. On the nose, cherries, blackcurrants and spices with oak vanilla notes. Rich plum and cassis with oak spices; intense tannins and an elegant finish. in the mouth. Drinking well now. It can be kept for up to 5 years.
